Arts Management has changed Until recently in the West, the public and private sectors of the arts were thought to be rivals. The state was the main source of funding for opera, theatre and dance companies, orchestras and national art galleries. Private companies provided popular entertainment. Both sides protected their territories, whose borderline separated "high" from "low" art. Now many state-subsidised companies receive income from the private sector. Public-private partnerships are customary. Old dividing lines have been crossed without the loss of artistic standards. A.I. members have assisted and continue to assist governments in this difficult process of transition.
