John Elsom



Short career outline
John Elsom PhD, BA (Cantab), is a writer, university teacher and company director. He has held posts with Paramount Pictures and the BBC, broadcast widely and taught in universities in Britain and the US, including the Department of Arts Management at City University in London, where he started the first MA in Arts Criticism. From 1972 to 1982, he was the resident theatre critic at The Listener. He has written for many magazines and journals world-wide, including on a regular basis, London Magazine (1963-70), Contemporary Review (1978-1992) and The World & I (1985 - today), where he is a contributing editor. He chaired the Liberal Party's Arts, Broadcasting and Heritage Committee (1978-88). He was the President of the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) (1985-1992), a UNESCO-affiliated non-governmental organisation, during the years that saw the ending of the Cold War; and helped to stage more than fifty international conferences. He is now an Honorary President. His books include Theatre Outside London, The History of the National Theatre, Erotic Theatre, Post-War British Theatre Criticism, Cold War Theatre, Is Shakespeare Still Our Contemporary? and (forthcoming) Missing The Point. His stage works include Maui (opera libretto for the composer, Barry Anderson), One More Bull and Malone Dies (1984, adapted from Samuel Beckett’s novel for the actor and comedian, Max Wall). Major European productions are planned in 2004/5 for The Well-Intentioned Builder (1965 and revised, 2002) and The Man of the Future is Dead (1985 and revised, 2002). He was a founder member and chair of the Bush Theatre in London, the chair of the Society of Hermes specialising in contemporary music and chaired the board of the International Workshop Festival. In 2003, he was decorated by the Romanian President, Ion Iliescu, for his services to international theatre and holds the title of Commander in the Romanian Order of Merit. He is a director of Arts Interlink.
