Following the destruction of the old Opera House in Valletta during the Second World War, many attempts were made to replace it on its old historic site, which is now being used as a car park. The plans to replace it in 2000 were delayed, but Theatre Projects led a proposal to convert an old fortress, the St. James’s Cavalier, next to the opera house site into a dazzling new Arts Centre, complete with a theatre-in-the-round, a cinema, an art gallery, a recital room and a restaurant. This has now become a major tourist attraction. The success of this ambitious but cost-efficient project has led to a renewal of the plans to re-build the Valletta Opera House on its former site.
